THE LICENSING COMMITTEE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sip..—Kindlv allow me space (o expre<w tlio pleasure it ?ave mo to see that- the old committee was licked at the polls on Tuesday—not that I care two straws whether the committee bo moderate or prohibition, for the unfortunate trade seems to have nothing to expect from either, but as a Britisher I protest against the bumptious style of tiieee prohibitionists, who after humble petition from the trade, would not allow them to be represented on the Licensing Bench even by a minority, practically claiming that they alone could keep the publican out. of gaol and the people of Dunedin from making sots of themselves, by the watchful eyes they would keep on them, hacked by the power af the law. In your issue of the 14th inst, the Rev. W. A. Sinclair is reported to have said he was glad to retire from the bench. lam pleased to know that, as it joes to show there is some grace left in him yet. It is no place for parsons, as ifc only tends to bring religion into contempt because it proves they have no faith in th« church tlicy belong to as a power for good unless backed by the civil law. The peoplo of Dunedin, as well as the liquor trade, have now an opportunity ef showing if they can keep fairly well within the bounds of moderation as regards the liquor laws without being hounded thereto by the stockwhip of tho prohibitionists.—l am, «te., AsTi-HuillUG.
