UMPIRES FOR THE CRICKET MATCH. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—l notice that Messrs D. Smyth an<! W. 11. Skitch have been appointed umpires in the match against the Victorians. Is either^ of these gentlemen a.member of tho Umpires' Association? Ifj not, why have they been appointed for this match? TJiero are men who devote their Saturday afternoons to assisting cricket by standing umpires for both Senior and Junior cricket, and it appeals that when a. match like this comes along these men are ignored and flighted by being passed over in favour of men who have no claim whatever to act. I dfJ not know whether Mr Smyth is a recognised member of the Umpires' Association or not; if so, I would liko to know how many matches ho has acted in this season. Mr Skitch is certainly not a member—at anyrate, an active one—of tho association, as he is plaving in Junior cricket every Saturday.

If members o£ tlio Umpires' Association arc qualified to do duty for our Senior clubs week after week, then they are qualified to act in this match. If tlicy are not qualified, then the sooner this association is disbanded the better it will ■bo for cricket. So long as it is in existence and recognised by the cricket authorities its members have a. right to consideration over any outsiders. I may fay that this is not the first time this same slight, has been cast on members, and there is little wonder that it is difficult to get men 1o act during the cricket season when fjiey are ignored in a. match like the Victorian one.—l am, etc., Gloves.

— Many queer customs and usages are prevalent among the- Cossacks of tho Don. No man cha.nges his clothing on .1 Monday. If ho did it is believed that he would suffer from a severe skin disease. On Thursday no fat or flesh must be pickled or corned.' If anyone neglected this the meat would be full of worms in a fortnight. Wool is not spun on a holiday, else the cattle will sicken and die. A hen is always given an uneven number of eggs to batch, never an even numbe:\ Bones left from a dinner at a- funeral are thrown into the river, else the dead will appear to the living in fearful shape; and at tho samo meal no one dare cut bread—it must always be broken.
