—In certain parts of tropical America tho natives are much addicted to "geophagy," or earth eating. From the hour of their birth they seem to acquire the habit, and mothers to quiet a squalling child will givo it a lump of dirt pulled from the wall of their mud hut. As they grow up the longing increases, and as tho dipsomaniac will go any length to gratify his yearning, sO will they barter their very souls for a lump of white clay, beside which delicacy even spirits and tobacco are reckoned of no account. This vice of "geopliagy" is in tho long run fatal, producing dropsr in the young and dysentery in the miadle-aged. Thoso thoroughly in its grip are judged worthless as servants, and such employers as have Indian or halfbred children in their service are wont to check their vicious and mud-devouring propensity by means of * wiro mask or muzzle.
