PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

.Tho Port Chalmers Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting yesterday evening, when there were present—The Mayor (Mr D. A. De Maus), Crs Shanks, Cable, M'Donald, Edgar, Morgan, Tait, Braadham, Mawson, and M'Plierson. An apology was received from Cr Barker.

■- After the Town Clerk had read the minutes of.the previous meeting, his Worship said Mr G. L. Asher wished to make a presentation, to -the council. '

: l£r Aeher, in a very neat speech, pointed out that in many other tawiis there was somo record of those who hail done eome servico to the ratepayers, and he asked his Worship and councillors to accept a framed portrait of tho first Mayor of the borough—Mr Daniel Rolfe, who was first elected Mayor on August 7, 1862, and was re-elected for two successive years. Mr Rolfe's duties were very arduous and difficult, ho having to put tjie whole of tho machinery in motion, drafting by-lawS) eto. He trusted the council would accept the painting from one who had served under Mr Rolfe. (Cheers.) 1 _ '. Tho Mayor thanked Mr Asher for his forethought in presenting the connoil with tho portrait of tho first Mayor of the town. It would ho hung up in the Council Chambers. Cr Edgar also responded. CORRESPONDENCE. ■A circular letter was read from Mr J. A. Park, the council to give assistanoe to 101 l bodies, landowners, and others interested in the question of amendment of the law on the subject of tho subdivision of lands, in tho striking out of section 3, subjection (1) of the Publio Works Act of 1903, the word( "and sudi resolution is approved by th< Governor-in-Council." — Resolved that thf latter clause of Mr Park's letter be given eSed. to. THE WATEBING TROUGH. Cr Mawson moved, in pursuance of notice given by him at last meeting—" That thj watering trough now at the top of Mount street bo shifted to the bottom of that street, between Chick's Hotel and tho old courthouse." This was seconded by Cr Tait, and after considerable discussion the motion was lost by, three to five. Cr Brandham declined to vote. ' REPORTS. Tho Works Committee reported that since last meeting the inspector, with his assistants, had been employed in various necessary works. In another day or two the work of Island Tcrrace would bo completed. During the recent wet weather tho lower level of the. terrace was quite free from wateT. Asphalting had been completed it the Daly, and'Laing street crossings, Mussel Bay crossing, and the top and bottom of Bernicia street, together with tho footpath at the Catholic Church. The streets, channels, etc., had all been attendedto, and the mud in George street scraped up and carted away.—Adopted. The Sanitary Committee reported that there had been a c'aso oi enteric fever in the borough, and prompt attention- had been paid to it.— Adopted. The Finance Committee in its report stated that the sum of £81 had been received since last meeting, while the sum of £5 0s Id had been paid out of the water extension account. 'Hie committee recommendctf tho payment of accounts amounting to £15G 19s Bd.—The report was adopted, with the exception of the account from tho solicitors, which was referred back to the committee, and the town clerk was instructed to write to the solicitors for in explanation of the various items. Tho Special Committeo appointed from the Water and Finance Committee to consider and repbrt on a letter referred to it at an adjourned meeting of tho council held on August 17, from Messrs G. and J.. A. Cook, solicitors, Duncdin, in reference to the works the council proposed to take in hand for impounding water flowing through the -lands of Messrs Barrowman and Perry, and thence through those of Mr and Mrs M'Dcrmid into tho. channel leading to the present reservoir, recommended that Messrs Cook be notified that tho council declines to entertain Mr and Mrs G. S. H'Derinid's claim for further compensation for water rights on Mr M'Dermid's lato father's property, seeing that tho council had already paid £1500 in full compensation for tho said water sites for all time

The Reserves Committee recommended that if Mr Alien was not the successful tenderer for the lease ot the quarries that he be granted six months for removal of tho buildings.— Adopted. TENDERS. ' 5 Cr Mawson moved that, as the tender for the construction of the new dock was only accepted during the afternoon, the tendors for leasing the quarries should stand over until next meeting.—This motion was lost, and, on tho motion of the Mayor, there being only one tender, it was opened. The tender was from Mr E. G. Allen offering £100 for three years.— . Tho tender was referred to the Reserves Committeo to report to the next meeting.
