Tho trial of intellect among tho experts .-was marked by' one noteworthy feature. A standard problem by Mr Jo"me 3 Allan, » well-known composer, was placed for the experts, and Mr C. Hansen sat himself in opposition to the lecturer. A fine exhibition- of analytical skill took place, and tho result was that the problem, which has stood the tost for so many years in Gould's " Problem Book," was proved to bo unwrnnd. Tho subject for next I'i id ay evening i:i "Traps and Shots," denwnstratecl by Mr F. Langston, one of New Zealand's foremost players. All comers, aro cordially welcomed.
