The bye-election fov the vacancy in Elgin district, caused by tho death of Mr Alexander Asher, K.C., resulted in Mr Sutherland (Liberal) being returned. Ho polled 2174 votes. Mr Rose Innes, tho Unionist candidate, received 1021 votes.

[Mr Sutherland has increased tho Liberal vote at tho general election of 1900 from 1744 to 2474, whilst tho Unionist voto fell from 1187 to 1021. Tho personality of tho candidates is, however, always an olomcni in such contests.l
