■; Drunkenness.—A first offender, who" was charged with tliis offence, appeared in the dock still suffering from the effects of drink, and was remanded till Monday, ■ Assault.—James Crichton was charged with assaulting George Frederick Smith, who asked that defendant should be bound over tf keep the peace—The defendant pleaded "Guilty" to the assault, but said that 'he had'been provocated by the complainant first calling him a thief, and-subsequently, upon defendant going ttf strike him, getting him dismissed from his position in Sargood's.—Mr Payne, who appeared, for plaintiff, said that it would be -unnecessary to say that Mr Smith did not call Crichton a thief. The complainant did not wish tp press tho caso, and if defendant. would undertake not to molest h'im in future ho would go no further with the proceedings.—Defendant gave this under.takiiig. ar.d hia Worship then discharged hiia with a caution.
