" The .Drainage Board's Secretary wroto requesting the council to take the necessary : legal steps for recovery of arrears of drainage i rates.—Left to ■ tho town ■ clerk. His Worship, the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr T. R, .Olirietie) forwarded a copy of the draft ] constitution of tho Otsgo League for tho! advancement .of the commercial and general • interests of the.'province! for the council's consideration.—Received. Albert Beck wrote drawing attontion to the bad and somewhat dangerous condition of tho cycling track in the South Dunedin Borough. He stated that the track was badiy cut up by dray traffic, and where the asphalt had been out. for drainage or gas supply purposes tho channel thus loft had never boon' properly filled in, with the result , that great. discomfort wns. occasioned to ; cyclists. The Mayor stated that lie had received a. request from Mr Bottiug for permission to erect a verandah' fronting Cargill road. Mr Bottmg lind forwarded the plans, and requested permission to erect the posts in line with the tramway poles. Personally, he the Mayor) thought, it advisable that all poHs along the road should be in line.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. . The Mayor shted lhat he hod received si petition. requesting him to take a poll on the question of rating on unimproved values. Several were informal, but they wore not sufficient to reduce the percentage be!ow 15 per cent, of the ratepayers. The poll would be on March V.—Cr Henderson: The borough will be amalgamated with the city theii, and' the petition will fall to the ground. ' Tho regular meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, hc'.a yesterday evening, was attended by the Mayor" (Mr D. A. Do Mails), Crs Shanks, Clark, Mnwson, Edgar, Barker M'Phorson Grimscy, Tait and Cable. It; Foreman, cleric of the District High School Commitee, wrote calling attention to the dangerous stale of tlio footpath in front o( tho janitor's house, Ajax read.—Referred to the Works Committee. J. Fergus, B. P. A T cale, and E. Mndigan wroto referring to the ctote of that pint of Wicklillo terrace extendiug from the foot of Mr Knewslubb's steps in Lahig street to the front of section 318, Wickliffo terrace.— Deferred to the Works CommitUc, with power to act. The rpport of tho Sanitary Committee, whioh appeared in the issue of tho Times of the 11th inst., was adopted. The Works Committee reported on the various matters which had occupied its attention since last meeting.—Adopted.' The- Hesorves Committee reported that a notice had been received to. the .effect' that' docks and other noxious weeds growing on "the Town Belt and water reserve at Miiiiwafci bo cut. The stock inspector's request had been nttended to.—Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that since last meeting £253 13s 2d had been received. The committee reooniiucnded that accounts amounting to f-12 13s lid l)e pasEed for payment.—Adopted Or Boiltor moved—" That in future the corporation employees discontinue.laying drains for. private persons."—Cr Grimrey said ho would support the motion if tho mover would a-dd private asphalting.—Cr Edrar Eaid the' act gave the power lo the counc.t to lay down private drains.—The Mayor said if a notice was'given to a property-owner to lay down a drain, and the request was not complied with, then the council had the power to lay. down tho drain and charge for the same—Cr Tait (chairman of the Works Committee) said that if a, property-holder laid down a,dram and it was not satisfactorily laid it would cause a grea.t amount of trouble to'the, inspectors. The council only charged for thu material and labour for any private drain.— Crs Cable, M'Phcrson, Mawson, C!<ivk, mid Shanks opposed tho motion, considering the present system was the most satisfactory,—Cr Barker said after hearing the opinion of tho councillors he would ask his Worship's permission to withdraw the motion.—Tho request was granted. Several suggestions for improvements were referred to the Works Committee. One tender was received for cutting tho grass oi? tho streets'and removing same, and referred, to the Works Committee.
