BRASS BAND CONTEST.

(]?Kit United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 13. The North Island brass band contest,, which is being-held this year in Auckland for the first time, opened to-day at His Majesty's, when tlirso sections of the solo competitions were completed—one each in tho morning and afternoon and the third in the evening, The contest is recognised by landsmen generally as the greatest test he-id in tho colony for years, as the three bands that liavo generally won contests amongst them—Wellington, AYanganui, and Kaikorai—arc on this occasion competing, and meeting caeh other for tho first time. Tho judge is Mr AV. S. King, of Christchurch. In all there are 11 full bands competing, and from fivo others soloists and quartet parties have entered for, various events, making a total of 16 bawls represented. Tho following are tho results of the three competitions, 120 being the possible marks:— B PLAT BARITONE SOLO.-A Martin (Waiiganui Garrison). 112 marks, 1; P. Dixon (Wellington Garrison), 103, 2; H. According -to the judge he suffered principally from his erratic work, and is a very spasmodic player and nnoven in his time. He somcwlmt--exaggerates his accents and other expression marks, otherwiso ho would 'have shown to much better advantage. AA*. P. Coughlan (Kaikorai) tied for second pmo for the E flat bass solo with S. Ingall (Wanganui). Regarding Coughlan the judge said ho gave a fairly good rendition of his (solo. B. • Gunner, tied with .several others for fifth placo in..this competition, and of him the iudgn remarked that ho gave a moderate performance, and that his solo was a little too heavy in. character J. O'li' ien (Kaikorai) -won tho second prize in the B flat euphonium solo. The band contest judge, describes the performance as a splendid'effort,, well read from Winning to end. T. fir.av .(AVwwmii) won this competition with. the.maximum marks. The first test selection is played to-morrow night.
