STATISTICAL RETURNS.

WELLINGTON, February 10. For the quarter ended 31st December the total value of the imports was ±53,254,996 (including specie to the value of £8957), as against £3,365,777 (including specie. £128.785) for the corresponding quartor iu 1903. The total imports for 1904 amounted to £13,291,63'!, as against £12,788,675 in 1903. For the quarter Auckland Received the greatest quantity jof imports, £1,018,623 worth, 'Wellington coming next with £823,780. The United Kingdom sent goods to tho value of £1,837,336, a falling off of £130,000 on tho 1903 figures. Tho imports from Australia and Tasmania amounted to £301,914, as against £460,693. America's figures show .but a small advance, being £424,872, compared with £440,447 in the 1903 quarter. Canada and British Columbia combined show a notable advance from £12,632 to £37,393. Europe sent us £167,138 worth of goods, as against £167,033. We exported to tho United Kingdom £2,336,792 worth of goods. To Australia wo sent £438,886 worth, and to the United States £128,989.

Our total exports for the quarter were valued at £3,014,359, as against £2,847,647 in tbe 1903 quarter, Amongst- the ports Auckland heads tbe list with £640,993, Weijiugton being next with £597,642. The leading items of our exports were:—Wool, £981,602 (as against £639,247 in the 1903 quarter); butter and cheese, £542,523 (as against £531,954); gold, £442,998 (as against £507,556); agricultural products, £98.180 (as against £148,999); frozen mutton, £191,590 (compared with £179,275); and flax, £164,979 (as against £160,710). The exports for the whole year 1904 wore worth £14,748,348, as compared with £15,010,578 in 1903. During the last three months of last year 157 vessels from oversea arrived in New Zealand ports, with 277,271 tons of cargo, the total for the wholo year being 629 vessels, with 1,180,366 tons of cargo. Tho totals for 1903 were 617 vessels and 999,116 tons of cargo. The vessels cleared outwards during the quarter number 147, the, cargof taken away being 233,552 tons. For the whole yoar the • clcarances were 608 ships, and 1,140,778 tons of cargo. The values of tho imports in the chief centres of the colony for the years 1903 and 1904 aro:—Auckland—l9o3, £3,167.185; 1904, £3,248,163. Wellington-1903, £3,965.891; 1904, £3,796.746. Lyttclton and Christchurch -1903, £2,025,427; 1804, £2,320,507. Dunedin—l9o3, £2,049,094; I§o4, £2,243,006. Total for the colony—l9o3, £12,788,675; 1904, £13,291,634.- The grand total includes, specie—£7l2,7l6. in 1903, and £391,664 in 1904.
