A. return furnished to the City Council to-night shows that claims .paid_ to date in connection with the street-widening schemes have amounted to £147,811, oiid tho claims still to pay £163,359.

OHRISTP/TIUROH. October 22. Residents in Riccarton and Sockburn at the poll to-day declared in favour of raising a loan for running electric trams in tlioee districts .connected with the city system. The sum required is £55,000, and the proposal to raise it was carried by 486 votes lo 43. This lino will tap a large suburban district, which at present is fed by coachcs alone. TIMARU, Oclobor 22. Mr Nixon, Collector of Customs, secured two convict-ions this morning for failure to deface stamps on hoor casks. Tho information was laid under section 19 of " The Beer Duty Act, 1880."
