THE NEW LICENSING BILL.
(Per United Pits.-is Association.) WANGANUI, Ootobor 22. At a public meeting of temperance sympathisers to-night tho new Licensing Bill was strongly condemned, anil tlio following resolution carriwl unanimously:—"That this largo gathering of tcmporance sympathisers records its strong protest against tlio 'clausM of tho now Licensing Bill which malto provision for the mayors of boroughs and chairmen of counties to be ox officio monir bcrs of licensing committees, and makes it possible for liquor dealers to ho elected to sit upon licensing benches; takes away the power of the people to vote to reduce licenses without restoring discretionary powers to the licensing committees; increases the number of liquor bar;; and attempts to extend tho time between tho taking of the local option vote; and attempts to force prohibition to a degree never contemplated by the No-license party, ond, in our judgment, exceeding the right of tho Legislature to interfere with tho nrivate habits of tho noople. That tho resolution "bo sent to the member for tlio district." '
