OAMARU NEWS NOTES.

(Fnosi Otm Own CoRP.E3rosDEKT.) OAMAttU, March 2. Tho Wnkari School Comraittcc'3 selection of Mr T. C. Harrison as their head master • will remove from this district a teacher who is deservedly popular. Mr Harrison'is not only a capable and-successful teacher, but he iisi3 proved himself u public-spirited man, and has been tho head unci front of all enterprises in Kakamii. His long connec-' tion with the school, as wall as with public movements of various kinds, has made him a wide circle of friends, who will be sorry to hear of his change, though heartily congratulating him on his advancement in his .profession. An enterprising fishing firmat Moeraki, of which Mr Fergitsson, is the canager, have- just purchased a new boat for employment on the fishing banks off that peninsula. The boat has o> large sail-spread, is four tons burthen, fully decked, and cost £120. This industry is evidently being energetically developed. At a meeting of merchants' held here today it was decided to sent! tho following wire to the Premier:—"Mooting .of .merchants held to-day strongly urgee Government send Mr Allo. to inspect Waitaki 'River. Please reply." There is a good deal of interest taken in this subject hero just now, the general feeling being that the powor at present running to waste in this large river might be utilised to the great benefit of the whole district. With such a report as Mr Allo would supply on the subject, much valuable information will be obtained on <i subjcot of importance. The many friends of the Rev. James Skinner, of Weaton, will learn with regret that his health is causing his friends grave anxiety. Anemones, Ranunculus, and Lilies are threo of the finest bulbous flowers. Kiramo and Blair are offering these Bnlbs for planting now, at exceedingly low rateii.... — In Abyssinia the coffee plant grows wild in great profusion, and' derives its name from Kaffa, a district of that country. Our Waipori correspondent write:—"The Golden Shore drerlge,- Waipori, sunk in her paddock about 4 o'clock on Friday morning-. TEo.cause'of the accident is not at present known, but it is thought by some that on account of the small amount of freeboard, and the pontoons having an accumulation of tailings in the shoot hor deck may have been submerged ana the hull filled with water. The hands on board at the time had to leave in a hurry, and one man hod a narrow escape -fiom being drowned, as he was thrown off the- deck and ■was unablo to swim. LADY CHARLTON GOLD DREDGING COMPANY. An extraordinary general meeting of shareholders in the Lady Charlton Gold Dredging Company was held in the office of the secretary (Mr K. Stuart Ramsay), Vogel street, last night. Mr T. K. Hnrty presided, and eight! other shareholders were present. j Tlw Chairmiin said that Eince the sub-commit- j tee appointed in August last hail reported on the : claim the- dredge- had worked through and bottomed the .supposed rich shaft mentioned i in the prospectus, but faikd to find the waah j as indicated (herein. On tho whole, the dredgo , had averaged Boz or Ooz a, week, which was not i sufficient to pay expenses and effect repairs, j and, seeing that the returns were so poor, tho { directors considered it would bs advisable- to I call shareholders together to look into the J position. He read a number of roports from j the drodgornaster to show tho recent return?, j Tho ground was getting harder to work, and ! was taking more out of tho machinery. On ! the 14th February, when a. return of 9oz was repotted, the dredgemaster stated that there was more clay than usual, that the ground was harder, and that some heavy repairs were necessary; The dredgoinas!«r did not hold out much hope of tho ground being better, and if the shareholders decided to go on they would need to spend a good deal of money in repairs. After a discussion on the company's finances, Mr Vigors moved nnd Mr Steel seconded— " That the company be wound up voluntarily." The motion was carried, and it was agreed to hold a meeting to confirm tho resolution on the 23rd inst. SALE OF DREDGING PLANT. Tlie Ford's Creek dredge and claim were offered for sale by auction by Messrs Park, Reynolds, and Co. at their rooms yesterday at' noon. There was only a fair attendance, and i the bidding, which commenced at £100, rose to £520, at which price Mr O. Moller became : the purchaser. A small syndicate has been : formed for thepiirposo.of further testing the ■• claim, and it is intended to put the dredge j into commission as soon as possible. j The Perpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency j Company held a sale of dredging machinery at; their Tooms. yesterday afternoon, when tho ', engine, machinery, and pontoons belonging to '■ tho Duke of Wellington Gold Dredging Com- , pany were offered. Ttere was a fnir attend- ; ance, but competition was not very spirited. ■ The first lot, comprising a. Garrctt engine ■ (nominally 1G horse-power), winchi and 10-ineh Tangya pump, were purchased by Mr Edward : Roberts for £255. The pontoons were bought ( by the Daylight Company for fIG, but the . machinery, buckets, elevator, screen, boiler, etc., were passed, in, as the best offer for them did not reach tho liquidator's reserve, TUAPEKA MINING NOTES (FkOH OUR WeTHERSTONES CORRESIPONDSNT.) WETHEBSTONES, March 2. Tho manager of tho Local Industry expecU to have the first wash down on Wednesday, 4th inst. They arc groand sluicing the present paddock. The false bottoms in the top box getting c-ogged with clay, a few of the ripples wore lifted and cleaned last Saturday, when' 3oz 7dwt was obtained. A few hundred-weights of sand, being the pannings off for the last 12 months, were streamed—that is, put through a box covered with matting, 4oz being obtained i from it. The first wash down out of the present paddock.on Saturday-last.returned 260z lOdwt, . THE WEST COAST. ' (From Oub Own Correspondent.) ] GREYMOUTH, March 2. : The Greenstone Creek dredge, with a return ; of : 18oz for 130 hours, had worked ground (tho ' Bun Tuck workings) all along her face, with J the exception of a very small corner at the ' northern end. This is a< fair return under the ! circumstances. Solid ground may be met with . at any time, and then matters should wear an ■ improved aspect. . ' The Greenstone Junction got 9oz 17dwt 12gr ' for 100 hours. Owing to her ■stripping the key- ] ways of tho first motion shaft nearly three ' sl'ifts- were lost. Nevertheless the ground 1 proved far from as good us was expected. Until .' deeper ground is :rnet with the returns are not. I expected to ■materially, improve. - 1 . 1

Tho Amikitea dredge -was idle most of last week undergoing repairs. The Buller dredge, at Fern Flat, has temporarily ceased operations owing to the unsatisfactory returns. It is understood the crew are negotiating with tho owners with a view of working on tribute. Tho New Greenstone dredge is still awaiting a new crown wheel, and is lying idle. Tho Greenstone Three-mile dredge did not wash up owing to loss of time putting up the new crown wheel. The Callaghan's Creek dredge did not wash ■up. She had a good deal of trouble with timber and silt. The Bulkr Junction dredge was stopped for a. timo through flood. The return is 590z ior 93 hours. Tho Erickson's Reward dredge is working well, the ground being a bit over the margin, last week giving 2ooz for 115 hours' run. The Aldinga dredge got 15oz 14dwt. The wash is rough and shallow, but shows signs of improvement.' THE LONG VALLEY GOLD DREDGING COMPANY. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— jMay I -ask, through tho leniency ot your columns, when arc shareholders living at a distance likely to receive justice at the hands of directors of some gold dredging companios? The action of tho directors of tho Lcng Valley Gold Dredging Company appears to be another attempt to push out shareholders. I am a, shareholder in this company, and since the ladder of the dredge has been lengthened have received, no information whatever of tho results of tho working. All I have is a circular calling a meeting to confirm liquidation. Has a syndicate boon formed to purchase the dredge and claim to tho exclnsion of shareholders? or aro wo to be informed of the prospects of and results from tho dredge since it was altered, and are wo to bo allowed to join tho syndicate and thus retain our interests, or are we to bo left out in the cold? I trust, Sir, that shareholders not living too far to attend the meeting on March 13 will make it their business to roll up and endeavour to frustrate if proposal which appears to me to be only one of many such already come to light, and' which has blighted the dredging industry.—l am, etc., Above-board. the nelson creek gold dredging COMPANY. TO THB EDITOR Sib,—ln this morning's issue of your valuable paper I notice you publish amongst tho dredgim; returns the following—v<?.., Nelson Creek. 31oz for four days. Ido not know where you obtained your information, hut it is distinctly inaccurate, as the return for last week ■was 4907. for 124 hours, which return I immediately upon receipt this morning furnished your reporter with. I would rcapectfnlly suggost that in future, baforo publishing the return, your reporter verity sa-me by applying to . the oilke of tho. company, where authentic information can always be obtained.—l am, etc., W. Holsted, Starch 2. Secretary Nelson Cresk Co. [The return referred to was Jelcgrapned to us in common with other leading papers by tho representative of the Press Association ot Greymouth, and as there was no reason to doubt its genuineness, was published in duo. course. It is probable in fact that it is correct so for as it went, for the lime given for 31oz was four days, while it took 5 days and 4 hours to get 490z." We arc afraid Mr Holstcd's suggestion that we should verify all returns recoived by telegram is impracticable. We only publish such news when it reaches us from sournc> which we have reason to regard as i ro!iab!e.' To ask us not to publish it until verified bj the secretary would in sorno in-slance-s ho tantamount to its suppression. In I view of the position hold by the Nelson Creek I Co. among West Const gold dr-edging com- .' panics, we suggest that Mr Hoisted and his ■' directors take steps to have the returns made known officially on Saturday night or Monday morning. Other companies whose properties , aro quite as difiicnlt to communicate with j manage to do this, and we hone to sec the Nelson Creek Company fall into lino, and thus put an end to rumours, surmises, and speculation. -Ed.
