Friday, July 25. (Before Mr C. C. Graham, S.M.) A Charge of Theft—Annie Dohig was charged with, on July 24, at Dunedin, stealing a piece of print material, valued.at £1, the property of John Hoskin Carter.—Mr Hanlon appeared for the defence.—Sub-inspector Dwyer applied for a remand, as the accused hqd only been arrested the previous night, and'there would probably be other charges to hear.—Mr Hanlon objected to a remand. According to his instructions no other charges could be laid, and the articles found by the police could be satisfactorily accounted for by the daughters of the accused.—The Sub-inspector stated that the arrest had only been made the previous night, and the accused had been immediately admitted to bail.—His Worship said the request for a remand under these circumstances ivas not unreasonable.—Mr Hanlon said the police got their remands too readily, and, if tliey did not, would bo better prepared with their cases. It was grossly unreasonable that they were not prepared with the present case, .and a charge of this kind should not be allowed to hang over a person's lipid.—Accused was remanded till Tuesday, bail being allowed in her own recognisance of 120, and one surely of £3D. Committing a Nuisance in a Railway Carriage,—ltobfcrt Elder was charged with, on * June 30, committing a nuisance in a first-class smoking compartment of the 2.10 p.m. train ircm Dunedin.—Mr Hanlon appeared for the defence, and stated that in a previous case against the same accused ho had produced medical testimony showing the man suffered from an infirmity.
