NEW ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES

WELLINGTON, July 1, The following aro the electoral boundaries i as revised by the commissioners: — I OAMAIIU. I Oamaru district comprise."! the Borough ot Oamaru, the-Papakaio, Waiareka, lnchholme, and ICakanui'Ridings of Wuitaki County; that portion of Otcpopo Riding of Waitaki County situated north ot a line commencing where the north branch of the Waiaiinkarua River cropaea the north-western . boundary of Otcpopo Hiding, and proceeding easterly to the confluence of the said north branch with the south branch of (he Wuianakatua River, and thence a'.ong the Waiannkr.rua 'River to the soa coast, together -with that portion o! Olakaika Riding of JVaitaki'Cou'.ily lying between the north and south branches of tlie Ivakdnui liivtr and extending to Kakanui Peak. MQUNT IDA. THE NEW ELECTORATES. | -The now ol&eroral districts reeommc'-ided I by the Rop'resantatioii Commission are: — ICaiwara (north-west pf Auckland), Grey Lynir (suburb of Auckland), Wangaelm (Wangauui district), and Newtown (Wellington), in tlip North Island; and Courtcnay 1 (Canterbury) and Mount Ida (Otago), in the South Island, . THE CITY. .CONSTITUENCIES. A RETROGRADE SSTEP. Tho. suggestion that the city electorates should be out up into electorates,'as thoy wore , former.y, is generally regarded as ft retrograde step, and it will be very strongly opposed < indeed, if tbo bill proposing it is introduced and persevered with it will lead to one of tho hottest fights of tho session. The few city members I wav able to goo this evening expressed very dc- 1 tided opinions against the idea. Mr Millar, tho senior menVbcr for Duncdin, said: "I am opposed to it. At present we have community of interest in the cities, and the tendency is to enlarge them and their sphere of mduonee. -The splitting up of the citv into threo constituencies would simply kiii any Greater Duncdin scheme. Besides; this is the wrong time to make any change, when wo are just on tho eve of a general election. Iu answer-to a question as to whether the proposed bill- would have any chaaeo of .getting through Parliament, Mr Millar said he did not think so. Mr Collins (Ohrislchureli) said he would oppeso - tho bil), Such a proposal wouid militate against tho efforts that were being made m Christchurch at the present time to establish a Greater Ohristcbitrch, with important electrical, drainage, and water works. Mr Smith said ho was'altogether opposed to the suggested alteration. The interests of tho cities would bo best consulted by leaving things'as they were. Mr Atkinson _ (Wellington) also opposed any alteration in-the direction indicated. Ho did not wish to represent a ward. Thoy W improved, the City Council by the abolition of wards', and now they woro going to re-establish then! in conncction with parliamentary representation. THE EFFECTS OF THE CHANGES. In tho absence of a map, it is difficult to form any exact idea'about tho efrcct of tho alterations in tho boundaries of the constituencies. As one lnectß individual membors, however, one gots some idea of what has been dcio., 'Mr M'Nab tells mo that that part of Clutha electorate adjoining Gore, which is included in the Knapdaie road district, is added to Mataura. Mr Thomas Mackenzie will, I hear, stand for the altored WaiKounjti electorate; and Mr Charles Lewis is said to havo an excellent ehnnee for tho now Courtenay scat. Mr G. W. Mr Stevens, told me that the commissioners had cut out of his electorate one township that gave him n bannuct 8 few days ago, and another township that- was poing tn give him one oexfc week. He has, however, got some, new territory, and on the whole lie seem; satisfied with the gifts the god 3 havo sent him,''
