THE HATUMA ESTATE BALLOT
XAPIKR. April 28. Tlio Haliima estate, (if 25.737 acres, acquired compulsorily under the Laud for Settlements Act, and subject to long lentil proceedings between Mr Purvis Russell mid the fiovernment, was balloted for at Waipukurau yesterday in the presence of a large .number of interested, spectators. Altogether there were 225 persons, representing 930 applications for 57 sections. The ballot was held under the supervision «f the Crown Lands Commissioner and the Hawko's Bay Land Hoard. For some sections there were as many as 40 to 50 applicants. In addition to successful Huwkc'slSay applicants, sections went, to settlers from Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington, Taranaki, Wanganui, Wairarapa, and elsewhere. The ballot on the whole was eminently successful.
