A SHEARERS' DISPUTE,

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, February 1. (Received Feb. 1, at 9.65 a.m.) There is trouble between the shearers and pastoralists. The Workers' Union wrote to the Pastoralists' Union suggesting a conference to fix rates of wages, and to consider the question of unionists versus non-union-ists, and other matters. The Pastoralists' Union replied that, as they made no distinction between unionists and non-unionists, they saw no necessity for a conference. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON,, February I. During the hearing of the drivers' dispute: to-day the city engineer stated that if the demands of the union were granted it would involve the City Council in an additional annual outlay of £2183. The assistant-manager of the city tramways said tile demands meant £1900 extra expenditure ,on the. tramways. The demands of the Cooks' and Waiters' Industrial Union were filed to-day, and 69 employers cited to appear before the Conciliation Board. The rates of pay asked for range from £4 to £1 weekly for cooks, and £2 5s to £1 in the case of waiters. Demands are also made with respect to the wages of pantrymen, and porters. TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL. The adjourned meeting of the Tradeß and Labour Council was held on Thursday night; Mr Wathen (president) in tha chair. The Coachworkers and Wheelwrights and the Bangeworkers-were admitted to affiliation with tho council. The Organisation Committee reported that sineo last meeting two new unions had been formed. Tho following items were ordered to be placed an the conference order papei for the meeting to be held in Dunedin during Easter:— (1) Factories Act Amendment, with eight . hours five days in the ' week and four hours on Saturdays; (2) nationalisation of coal mines; (3) establishment of Government tailoring and boot-making factories; (4) establishment of ammunition factory ; (5) a clause be put in tho FaotoVy Act compelling manufacturers to put a brand on all goods offered fo. sale; (6) amendment of Arbitration Act; (7) amendment of .Turors Act, to provide for one jury list-, and 10s per day for all jurymen in attendance, also that no solicitor bo allowed to see the jurv panel; (8) that a penalty clause be added to tho Labour Day Act; (9) that the Colonial Secretary be requested not to issue any totalieator permits on Labour Day; (10) that the Government be askod to introduce a bill next session to compel municipal authorities •to build workmen's dwellings in all large centres of population; (11) reduction of size and weight •»f oornsaoks, weight not to exceed 2001b.
