OTAGO BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.

Tho following is the thirty-eighth annual report of the Otago Benevolent Trustees for presentation to the annual meeting of subscribers to be held to-day:— l'he total number of persons relieved during the year was 1635, a decrease of 341 on the previous year.

The number of inmates en Ist January, 1900, was, 187 men, 64 women, and 1 child;—total, 252." Received into the institution during the year, 140 jnen, 61 women, and 1 child; —total, 2a2 (including 28 women admitted into the lying-in ward). Discharged, 139 men, 60 women, and 1 child;—total, 200. Leaving on 31st December, 1900, 188 men, Go womefi, jind 1 child;— total, 254. Thirty-eight deaths occurred during the yew. The expenses of the institution amounted to £4346 Uβ Bd, The expenses for maintenance amounted to £3698 2s, a decrease of £47 9s 9d on the previous year. The' ahsrges are for cost of food, clothing, fuel, house furnishings, salaries of master, matron, servants,, and doqtor, medicine,- funerals,. municipal rates, half office expenses, and a!! working expenses in connection with the institution. The weekly average was 256 as against 260 last year, which gives a charge of 5s 6}d per licnd per week. The amount disbursed on outdoor relief was £5436 10s lid, a decrease of £78 6s Bd. This includes the payment of £12 ISs on a-ccount of children boarded out. ■ • The total amount expended was £10,138 Is 10d. •■ .
