CITY POLICE COURT.

■Wednesday, January 9. (Before Messrs J-. H, Morrison and the Hon. Hugh Gourley, J.P.'s.) Breach of tho Gaming Act.-Will'iani James iteshp, John Muirhead, Michael Phelau, and John Bortkwick were charged with playing a game of chanco known as "two up" on the Town Belt.—Mr Hanlon appeared for the defendants.—This caso was adjourned for the magistrate's decision, and as Mr Graham was engaged at an inquest at Port Chalmers a further -adjournment was necessary. His Worship will givo his decision on Monday next. Drunkenness.—Three first offenders were convicted and discharged, . David Bethuue, an old offender, was similarly dealt with, and on the application of his son Lad a prohibition order issued against him, to apply to Dunedin, G'avershani, and Taieri licensing districts. John-Breuuan, a very youthful inebriate, who is already prohibited, was ordered to bo imprisoned until 10 o'clock on Monday morning. A Disreputable Pair—William iiruno and Ellen Hayes pleaded Not guilty to damaging two windows and a door, tho property of James Nickleqon, on January 9. The accused wero further charged .with being found by night without .lawful excuso on the premises of James Nieklcson, and- admitted tho offence.— Mr Kicly explained that Bruno was formerly a tenant of Nickleson's, and had to be ejected. He went back on Tuesday night with a woman of bad character, and forced an entrance to the house, staying thero for the night, The lock of tho door was broken and four panes of glaea were smashed.—After hearing the evidence, the Bench sentenced each of the accused to o«o month's imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. A Prohibition Order.—A prohibition order was issued against John Bonner Forman on the application of his wife. Mr Wilkinson appeared' in support of the application. A Streef Row.—Henry Howard was charged with using behaviour in George street on Christmas morning whereby a breach of tho peace was occasioned.—Mr Kioly explained that at 12.30 on Christmas morning three or four young men were standing in George street at the corner of St. Andrew street. Their attention was attracted by a scuffle, and they saw that ono man was on the ground. One of tho group, named Pine, went to the rescue, and Howard struck him twice. Howard's companion, Gillan, had got away up country, and th» police were unablo to find him.—Evidence was given for the police, after which.Mr Hanlon submitted that there was.no case to answer, and the evidence was insufficient to justify the execution of the proverbial cat,-The Bench called for a defence, and accused and two others gave evidence.—A fine of 20s was inflicted. By-law Cases,-John Laffey, for whom Mr Stilling appeared, pleaded guilty to riding a bicycle without a light, and was let off with a caution. Thomas Andrews was similarly dealt with. William Mepde was convicted on a charge of setting fire to inflammable niatorifcl in the open air in the Borough of Caversham without giving due notico to the locul authority. No fine was imposed.—Alexander Lees pleaded guilty to driving a grocer's cart round Ogg's corner at other than a walking pace, but the delinquent' received the leniency extended in the previous cases.
