SOUTH AUSTRALIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright , SYDNEY, January 9. In the inter-State cricket match the South Australians in their second innings were all out for 156. Matthews made V,. New South Wales thus won by an innings and 105 runs. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. . (Per United Pbess Association.) t> * n EI 'UNGTON, January 6. I Tho Aucklanders should have had no diffi. ;-culty in saving a one-innings defeat, as today turned out showery and made things unpleasant for the bowlers: but, despite the capital display by the Mills brothers, the later men failed. A start could not be effected at the proper time and under the cricumstances , somo resolute batting might have succeeded in saving the game. As it was, they were beaten by an innings and 13 r,uns. Hay kept in, but only scored slowly, and could get no one.to stay with him. As on the previous day, Tucker was knocked about unmercifully by W. Milk, but he had his revenge by securing seven wickets for 66—a i very fine performance with the slippery ball. Clarke also bowled with effect, and Wright made amends for his mistakes of yesterday by catching three men behind the wickets. The game wa? not resumed till five minutea jto 12. W. Mills took advantage of the slip- ; pery ball and punished the bowlers severely, j Nineteen runs were scored from Tucker in j two overs, and 4 and 16 from two of Clarke's ; ' but the latter, with the aid of a fine one- : Handed catch in the slips by Upham, got rid j of I. Mills at 53. Stemson quickly hi,t up i double- figures, but W. Mills failed to get a ! fair hold of Tucker, and was caught at ; square-leg for a rapidiy-liit 48, in which were 'no less than nine fours. Stemson was caught ; in the same place, and as Elliott fell to the j wicketkeeper first ball, four wickets were ; down for 75. Hay and H. B. Lusk took the total to 81, when a heavy shower caused an early adjournment for lunch. On resuming four wickets fell for the addition of only 12 runs. Marshall and Hay made a Short stand, but the former, when looking like making a good score, skied one from Tucker, and wa9 caught by the bowler. Stephens stayed for : 5 runs more, and was bowled, leaving Hay to carry his bat for a slowly-got 20, the result of over an hour's batting. The following are the scores:— ■Wellington.
