CRICKET.

THE CANTERBURY MATCH.

The Canterbury team will arrive by express to-night, and no doubt there will be a fair muster of local players to welcome them. They will be put up at the Provincial Hotel. Everything points at the present time to a most' interesting match. Our visitors are in tho best of condition, ami the same remark may be made regarding our Otago representatives. IS'fj two teams on paper could lookmore evenly matched, and unless there is ;t collapse on one side or the other it must be interesting right to the finish. It is to be hoped that the Otago skipper will have a lucky coin, as, -in tho -'present' condition of the wicket, winning the toss may go a long wny towards winning the match.

(Per United Pbkss Association.) TIMARU, December 20. The Canterbury cricket team broke their journey south at Tiinaru, and met a somewhat weak eleven on the Athletic ground this afternoon. Barry, winning the toss, elected to bat on a good wicket, which, however, did not wear well. Canterbury put up 258 runs, Barry scoring 62. Callaway' 60. Reese 49, and Pearce 47. All those named ijlayed free and fine cricket against somewhat weak bowlino-. Callaway lifted a ball from Macintosh clean out of the ground on to the road on the north for six, and Reese Eent n ball from M'Caskill on to the pavilion. The innings closed at 6.10' p.m. South Canterbury have two wickets down for 14- runs.
