' DUNEDIN ENGINEERS. The Dunedin Engineers made what may be ■lermed a new departure, at anyrate so far as volunteering in Dunedin is concerned, when they decided to institute a route-marching competition. The event, which had been eagerly looked foiward to by the members, eventuated oa "Wednesday evening. The conditions diawn ■up to govern the competition provided that each section oi the company should constitute a team, each section being required to compete In its full strength, thus affording a thorough test of the marching capabilities of the members, exemption from the competition only being granted in certain special cases where it was clearly shown that attendance was impossible. Teams were prohibited' from moving at the double, but when a certain distance from 4hc Garrison Hall were allowed to march at ease in any military formation. J-he umpire, accompanying each team was responsible' that the conditions were adheied to. Teams were started at five - minute intervals, the section commanders drawing for places. No. 1 section, consisting oi 18 men, under the command of Corporal Jacobs vaa'the first to be.moved off by the star ex (Lieutenant Midgley) at 8.12 p.m. Chief Petty Officer Price, of the Dunedin Navals, accompanied the team as umpire. No. 3 section irith 20 men under Sergeant Flynn, and with Staff Sergeant-major Tayloi as umpire, followed next. Then came No 2 section of 19 men under Sergeant Bryant Lieutenant Lacey accompanying as umpire, while No. 4 section, consisting of 22 men under Sergeant Dredge, and with Lieutenant Ross umpiring, was the last- to start. ■ The route selected was from the Garrison Hall,, via the Main South road to Caversha.m, thence, by Forbury toad to St. Claii, returning via Victoria road, Queen s Drive, and Anderson's Bay road to the Gairisoii Hall.. The total, distance traversed was 61 miles, and, considering that the roads were in certain places very heavy, and that the men wore armed, the results of the contest must be deemed as.very satisfactory. . Sergeant Flynn s ' section gained the honour of first place, accomplishing the inarch in lhr 23mm, with Corporal Jacobs's. section second lta » , time ol iht 24min 15sec.
