AUCKLAND, August 9.

Frederick Eyre, steward of the Working Men's Club, \vas arrested to-day, charged that, on or about August 3, he stole £52, the property of Charles Samuel Wright and Peter Dignan, trustees of the Working Men's Club.

The Railway League have sent another communication to Auckland members of Parliament,- urging that the Government bo persistently pressed to at once disclose their intentions on the North Island Main Trunk railway. What is wanted is a declaration by Parliament as to the route, and an indication when through railway communication may reasonably be expected to be completed. The league says it is not prudent to sit quietly waiting until the Publje Works Statement is: brought down.

GISBORNE, August 9. At the half-yearly Supreme Court session, which opened this morning, only five criminal cases of minor importance and two small civil actions were set down for hearing. Mr Justice Conolly, in addressing the Grand Jury, congratulated the district on the lightness of tho calendar. Kuka Miromiro was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment for forgery. Edward M'Mahon, charged with assault and causing bodily harm, vas_ acquitted. Tv Nionia, on a charge of liorse-stealing, was sentenced to two years' hard labour.

WELLINGTON, August 9. The Anglican Synod of -New Zealand has been convened at Napier- for January 29. Clerical and lay reuresentatives must be elected by November "29. ■ Mr-G. Hutchison and family left by the lalune to-night, en route for South Africa. Ihe Premier has written to the mayor agreeing to meet a deputation in reference to the university site on Monday next that being the first available date at his disposal.

The captain- and crew of the steamer City, of Lincoln, which was sold recently in Melbourne, arrived here to-day as passengers in the Talune, with the object of joining the Aotea, in order to return to Buenos Ayres, where they 'originally shipped. As the men had no money, the collector. of customs demanded that the captain should deposit a sum of money for payment under such circumstances as are provided by the Undesirable Immigrants Act, as a guarantee that if any remained in the colony after once they got ashore they would not become a charge on the State. The money was forthcoming, and the men landed to await the departure of the Aptea. -A deputation ■ from frienuly societies waited upon the Hon. Mr Ward with respect to the fares charged to members when travelling to conferences connected with' the orders. At,present members, ifl^ in a party of not less than 12, are allowed to travel first class at second class fares, and the -deputation asked that the privilege be extended to . any less number than 12. Mr Ward agreed to "this.

CHRISTCHTJKCH, August 9. Mr Napier Bell has submitted ,to the Lyttelton Harbour Board a report on the' proposal to widen the graving dock floor at Lyttelton to suit the shape of modern steamers, which are almost square in their section. Mr Bell suggests "that certain alterations should be made at a total estimated cost of £1424. The report was referred to the Harbour Improvement Committee for report.
