THE FIGHTING AT TIENTSIN.
SOME BRAVE DEEDS,
THURSDAY ISLAND, August 9. August 9, at 9.15 a.m.)
At Tientsin the men from the warship Barfieur suffered severely. Work on the ship itself was severely impeded owing to the number of killed and wounded. One of the Barfleur's midshipmen, 14 years of r-ge, was carrying messages from the men engaged. A Boxer fired at him at a 10 yards' range, putting a bullet through his helmet, and nipping off the top of his ear. Ha drew his revolver and killed his opponent.
Earlier in the. fight a Russian cavalryman attacked a vedette of six Chinese. He shot two dead and rode the other four down and killed them with his sword. The Russian commander pinned a mark of valour on his shoulder.
One report states that all the Chinese prisoners were shot. This action was justified by the brutalities they had practised on the Europeans who fell into their hands. (Received August 9, at 9.20 a.m.) ■ In a small arsenal outside Tientsin, captured by the British and Russians, over 3,000,000 cartridges and 30 Krupp field guns (all new), and many other arms were, found. Admiral Seymour gave the Russians the first chance of taking the place. They said that it could not be done. The Admiral then sent 400 marines and 100 bluejackets, under Captain Johnston, to take it. They got within 100 yds before they were discovered, when they made a rush and took it with the bayonet.' Several of the British, were killed, but all the Chinese cleared out.
A FORM OF PRAYER. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 9. The Bishop of Wellington has authorised a special form of prayer for the missionaries in China.
