A MYSTERY CLEARED UP.
(Fkoji Oub Own Cohrespoxdext.;
AUCKLAND, July 26.
A satisfactory solution lias just been arrived at of the mystery concerning the disappearance of some cheques, which has been the cause of a good deal of correspondence •between the Bank of New Zealand and the Piako County Council. Some months ago the clerk of the Piako County Council forwarded a .sum of money to the Bank of New Zealand at Hamilton to he placed to the credit of the council. This was done, and the usual bank receipt obtained by the clerk. - Included in the deposit were 'some Auckland cheques, which the Hamilton branch posted, with others, intending them to be delivered at the Auckland office for collection. The package went amissing, and the bank declined to give the council credit for the deposit unless duplicate cheques were produced. Some of the issuers of the cheques declined to give duplicates, unless both the council and°the bank would grant letters. of indemnity, which both declined to do. The matter remained in that position till the other day, when the cheques came to hand from England, having been sent to (he London branch of the bank, instead of the office in Auckland.
