THE WAIHEMO ELECTION.

ro TUB editor. ..• ".' Sir, —Mr F. W. Inder having practically: admitted my facts, it is unnecessary for mo to write further on this matter, for I have no ' desire to hit a man when he is down.'- .. I might, however, add that Mr Indor is' quite correct in assuming that my motives were not personal. The public can be safely left to judge as to whether my action was justifiable, but I am the best judge of my mojih'es, and I can only say that in writing those letters I was actuated solely by a sense of duty -

as a patriotic citizen of a free country. What I had to say of a p&rscmal character was necessary to expose what I considered to he a barefaced attempt by the Government to foist on a Liberal constituency a candidate who was not " a fit and proper person " for the position. My absence on the West Coast was the reason why the letter was not written sooner, and I had at first an idea to hold it over till after the election, but thought that .would hardly be fair, and you, Sir, will remember that when I handed it in I expressly asked you to publish it on Monday, so as to permit of a reply on Tuesday or Wednesday. As to Mr Indor's remark about the letter not pleasing, most people are by this time aware that I am much loss concerned about what pleases than I am about what is in accordanco with fredom and fair play. My t political position is not likely to be understood by our friend Mr Inder, for, if he will pardon me for f-ayinjf so, lie never knew what it was to possess a political principle in his life.—• I am, etc.,
