THE GROCERS PICNIC.
The' sixteenth annual excursion, and .picnic of the grocers of Dunedin^ was hold yesterday at Evansdale,: the, number attending it being./ as usual, very, large. The day proved fine, and' a very enjoyable time was spent. . The various races in connection with the picnic were closely contested, which speaks well, for the;handicapping of Mr C. G. Brodie, and as.no complaints were heard it is to be assumed that all were satisfied with'the' way he performed his duties. Mr W.S. Barraud acted as starter, and carried out his part of the day's work in an efficient manner, and, the Picnic Committee are, indebted to. Messrs Stevenson, Wilson, arid Kesist, who kindly acted as judges, their decisions meeting with entire satisfaction. The annual: cricket match Grocers v. Commercial Travellers was played in the afternoon, and resulted in a win; for the Grocers by 5 runs. The ' committeo ' one and all worked hard to iriako tho picnic a success, and the public evidently appreciated their efforts. During the return trip to town Messrs J. M. Marshall and P. Carqlin collected £1 Is in one carriage only from the grocers on behalf of " the absentminded beggars," which shows that, even in pleasure, they are not. forgotten.
