ROSLYN INSTITUTE.
The annual meeting of the Roslyn Institute was held last evening, there being a small attendance of members, and Mr R. Chisholm (president) occupying the chair. Apologies were tendered for the absence of Messrs W. Nicholson'and W. O. Millar.
The following is a summary of the report submitted by the committee: —
The year just closed has been one of steady progress and prosperity, and a large number of interesting works, by well-known authors, have been purchased, and the membership slightly increased, there beiri'g now some 40 names on the librarian's books. To augment the funds of the institute, the committee arranged for a lantern exhibition and concert combined, and the committee take the opportunity of expressing their hearty thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who so kindly gave their services at the entertainment, from which the institute benefited to the extent of £3 4s. The Government last session voted the sum of £2000. for subsidies to public libraries, and our portion amounted to £6 14s 8(1. The agreement with the Roslyn Sunday school teachers to raise the sum of £150 for enlarging and improving, the hall has, we regret to say, fallen through, and the committee decided to make application to First Church Deacon's Court for a donation for maintenance of the hall, in which the Sunday school has been conducted for a number of years, free ot rent. As a result of our application the sum of £10 10s has been received. The financial position of the institute, as submitted by the treasurer, shows the income to be £32 4s lOd; and the expenditure £26 Is 3d. leaving a credit balance of £7 3s 7d; and in addition to this there was a credit balance from last year of £3 17s lOd, making a total credit of £11 Is scl. The committee have pleasure in expressing their appreciation of Mr Millar's services as librarian.
The Chairman moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet, and said that during the year the institute had been able to do what it failed to do in the year previous. That was to add books to the library. The work of the institute had narrowed down to providing a library for those who wished for literature. It was gratifying to note from the balance sheet that they! would bo able to augment the books they now had, and he thought it might be a recommendation to the incoming committee to expend some of the money in this way, if they deemed it desirable.
Mr G. Calder seconded the motion, and mentioned that nearly £11 had been spent during ths past year on hooks, and that he was afraid that the.existing funds would be required for repairs to the building. Perhaps, however, money might be raised for that purpose by "means of another entertainment.
Thin suggestion lyas very favourably received, and the motion was carried.
Mr R. Chisholm was elected president. Mr F. Coull vice-president, Mr G. Calder treasurer. Mr R. Armstrong secretary, Mr W. 0. Millar librarian, and ..Messrs G. B. Lindsay, D. Scott, J. Armstrong,' J. S. Webb, and W. Nicholson a committee.
