AUCKLAND, August 17.

At the Police Court a girl named Emily Alice Murphy was charged with stealing four gold rings and two gold, chains from the dwelling of Charles Franchet, Union street. The girl sat in the dock in a very weak state, and in the early part of the morning she .had a fit in the prisoners' waiting room. She was attended during the hearing of the case by a lady. It will be remembered the girl was recently iden-' tified with the bogus marriage notice ■'Taylor—Murphy," .which she admitted she published in the Star. The evidence in the case disclosed that the girl had' boarded in Franchet's house, and whilethere she stole the .rings and gold chain. The girl was committed for trial.'

It is reported that the oyster cutter Willie Winkle, which was. lying, at anchor oft' Parker's Island, Coromandel, on Monday last, has disappeared, and was not to be seen to-day. It is surmised she has been earned out into the gulf.

A petition is in course, of signature here to the General Assembly urging the House to pass during the present session an act similar to the acts passed by Parliaments in Australia for submitting the question of federation with the Commonwealth to a vote to the electors of New Zealand, and, if the majority is in the affirmative, for
