THE FIFTH TEST MATCH DKAWN.

The weather was fine and the wicket fast for the third day of the fifth test match, but the attendance was not so large as on the two previous days.

On resuming play Iredale ' joined Gregory. The newcomer, after scoring 9, was bowled by Lockwood. Six for 242. Kelly, the next man, did not remain long, he being given out lbw to Jones. Seven for 257. M'Leod partnered Gregory, and a good stand was made. At 281 Rhodes displaced Lockwood, and at 287 Jackson replaced Jones, while Lockwood went on again at his old end. At 318 Gregory completed his century, after batting for five minutes under three hours. He was loudly cheered. At this stage Brock'well went out to field for Ranjitsinhji, who had injured one of his fingers in stopping a ball yesterday. At 340 Bradley replaced Jackson. Gregory was eventually caught in the slips, after being three and a-half hours ah the wickets. His score included 15 fourers. He played a fine innings, and received an ovation on retiring. Nine for 340. M'Leod also played a fine innings. Howell was badly missed in the slips by' Brockwell before he had scored. Jones was out the first ball.

The Australians, being in a minority of 224, followed on. Worrall and M'Leod opened tlie batting to the bowling of Lockwood and Townsend. In the second over Lockwood nearly bowled Worrall, and at the luncheon adjournment no wickets were down for 8 runs, Worrall being credited with 5 and M'Leod 3.

On resuming Rhodes and Lockwood began the attack, but at 22 Jones relieved the former. Both batsmen appeared uncomfortable. Bradley displaced Lockwood at 54. Worrall was badly missed by Fry at square leg when he had made 26. The batsmen now got fairly to work, and runs came freely. At 70 Jackson went on in place of Jones. Worrall completed his half-century nftcr 70 minutes' play. Hayward relieved Jackson at 103, and 10 runs later Fry went on at Bradley's end. The change brought about the downfall of Worrall, who 3 xuns later was caught by Lilley off Hayward. He played a dashing innings, and took 95 minutes to compile his score, which included 15 fourers. One for 116. Noble was welcomed by .-mother change in the bowling, Lockwood going on again in place of Fry, and at 135 Jones relieved Hayward. M'Leod was batting over two hours before he passed the halfcentury. MacLaren continued to ring on changes in the bowling in the hope of effecting . a separation. Jackson displaced Lockwood at 148 and Townsend Jones at 361, while Rhodes relieved Townsend at 182, and Bradley went on vice Jackson at 391.

M'Leod was dismissed 'by a bailer from Rhodes. ■ His innings, which occupied three hours, was a chanceless one, and his score included 10 hits for four. Noble, showing excellent defence, played a very patient innings. He hit 13 fourors. Trumper was magnificently taken by Rhodes off his own bowling. The second wicket fell at 208, the third at 224, the fourth at 228, and the fifth at 243.

Hill is improving. His condition is not

dangerous.
