Professor Bunsen, the famous German chemist; retat 88.

[Professor Robert Wilhelm Eberhard Bunscn, M.D., chemist, was born on March 13, 1811, at Gottingen, where his father was professor of Occidental literature; studied in the university the physical and natural sciences, and completed his education at Paris, Berlin, and Vienna. Having at Gottingen in 1833 taken his degrees for teaching chemistry, he succeeded "Wohler thrce_ years later as professor of this science iff the Polytechnic Institution at Cassel. After holding a number of professorships he declined a call to Berlin, which he received at the same time ts Professor Kirchhoff, with .whom he *is the founder of Stellar chemistry. He has made niuny important discoveries, and the charcoal pile which bears his name is in very extensive use. From the spectrum analysis down to the simplest manipulation of practical chemistry, his numerous discoveries have rendered the most distinguished services to science. THE EDINA-EXCELSIOR COLLISION.

MELBOURNE, August 17. The Marine Court of Inquiry found that both the captains were responsible for the Hdina-Exeelsior collision, in that they did not observe all the necessary regulations in regard to speed in a fog, otherwise they had done all that was possible. The matter has been referred back to the Marine Board.
