N. SUTHERLAND AND SCANDAL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Who is this N. Sutherland? Is he a leader of morals (?), of thought (?), of politics (?), of art (?), of fashion (?), of temperance (?). or of anything (V) in this city that you waste your space and your readers' time by publishing his trash? "Heaven save us," indeed, from N. Suthrland and hk funny little letters to the papers.—l am, etc., Dunedin, August 16. Poor. Piuicoddt.

FOOTBALL SCANDALS.

TO THK EDITOR. SlK,—I am sorry that I have roused the ire of "Exactly," but at the same time I am pleased to see that he has the manliness to admit that I was right in comparing him to a calf, for he says "he prefers a bullock for a companion before men." "Exactly" blames me for not " replying" to his letter, but I would like to ask him what there was in his letter to reply to. He 'tells a little tale in which he compares Mr Ballantyne to a calf, and I did the only thing possible under the circumstances, and that was to prove, by the authority of Robert Burns, that Mr B. was not the only calf in* Dunedin. "Exactly" says any hoodlum can write out a quotation, but I am of tho opinion that I am to be congratulated on the fact that 1 was able to form an estimate of " Exactly's" character merely by reading his letter of the 7th inst., and was able to telect such an apt quotation— a quotation which, from his own admission — in every respect suits his character. "Exactly " says it takes brains to write a reply. That may be so, but judging from his own effusions, the smallest particle of brains in any reply would far out weigh Hie sum total of the brains that "Exactly" displayed in his two letters.—l am, etc., August 16. R-I.P.

TO THE EDITOH. Sir, —" R.1.P.," when proposing to himself to reply to my letter, began by asking permission to reply. The very thing he never attempted to do. S. Ballanlyne. lion. sec. Kaikorai Football Club, to-day adopts other tactics. Ho puts into my letter what was never in it, and then to his own satisfaction gives his remarks on this emanation of his own brain. He says I repudiated the analogy between the bullock and myself. I did nothing of the kind. There is not a vestige of truth'in the statement. I neither repudiated it nor assented to it. When men adopt tactics like that, they must know they have a bad case on hand, and in this case they have both ■a bad and a dirty one—so dirty that no respectable paper dare publish a full account of what took place on the way between Christchurch and Duneclin. And yet I have little i'doubt evidence will be brought forward that certain passengers considered them so quiet and respectable that they thought they must have been holding a prayer meeting in the carriage. For reasons not at all flattering to the Ka'ikorai Football Club, I don't write above my name,as he proposes. —I am, etc., Dunedin, August 17. Exactly. [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed. O.D.T.] •

THE CODLIN,MOTH. TO THE EDITOR.

Sin,—Tn Saturday's Times, August 1", there is a paragraph bearing upon fruitgrowing in Central Otago, and the ravages of the codlin moth. Without going into details, I would mention that a. resident of Naseby has patented a means of destroying this pest. It has been tried with most beneficral results during the past two years, and appears to be a very simple inexpensive remedy. You say that Messrs Howden and Moncrieff have conducted various experiments. I would advise them to communicate with the-patentee, and try hi? simple method. L shall be glad to answer any inquiries.—l am, etc., Naseby, August 16. Riwid. 11. Buowne.
