He pointed out that capitation being paid on the average attendance, the • amount was affected by epidemics, and if there was sickness among the children of a large school it affected not only thafsohool, but the schooh, throughout Otago, for it was from ihe profit derived from the large, sohools that the board had to some extent to depend for the carrying on of the smaller schools in the country districts. Ho trustecf Ohat the members of Parliament would try to Ao something: in the way of effecting W chaege in regard to the payment of the capitation allowances. ' i Ah adjournment was then made to the sbhool hall, where the prizes were distributed to the higher olasses of the school. Mr J. H. Hosking (chairman of'the school committee) presided. Of course, as . thiß-was a pupils' exhibition, the work was ■'hot of any high' artistic' excellence, though. 'many of the young people displayed merit Wthat would not do discredit to our local Art ' Society, several of whose members have had tteir first training in this quiet little studio. ! The works of Misses F. Wilkinson, E. Hill, WH' Ford, and the Misses Tapper deserve ;'i special mention as showing assiduity and steady',progress; and of the. younger pupils ;; Masters TV". Dunbar and M. Wilkinson, and = the Misses W. Stark, and Morton are .noteworthy as marking a good start in the right ' direction. . Some lovely , art. needlework and Vhat a lady would declare was exquisitely fine -"point lace were also shown and much admired. " ' Thevisitors were entertained at afternoon tea ' by iiio, young ladies, and in partaking of the ; ; cfeery cup and admiring the work, two very ;' "pleasant afternoons wore spent.
