THE NORTH ISLAND TRUNK RAILWAY.

AUCKLAND, September 25.
A large mass meeting of workers was held last evening, Mr Malcolm Niccol presiding. The following resolutions were carried: —" (1) ' That tho Auckland and Taranaki members be requested to use every constitutional means in their power to, compel the Government to do simple justice to this part of !the colony by providing communication between Auckland and Taranaki without further delay ; (2) that this meeting resolves to oppose the return to Parliament at the next general election of any member who fails to actively and vigorously support the Auckland-Taranaki railway, regardless of party." The brass band in attendance played " God Save the Queen " at the conclusion of the proceedings. Ib was intimated that if a certain hon. member of the Upper House did not back down in his- attitude to the Stratford route he would next Saturday be burned in effigy, and the remains suspended to the nearest lamp post.
