Christian is the name of the man condemned to death for the wilful murder of a woman and child on Pitcairn Island.

Latest information regarding coral boring operations at Eunafuti states that hydraulic boring conducted from H.M.S. Porpoise had. to be abandoned when a depth of 280 ft had: been reached owing to the boring rods buckling. The party on shore had gone down to a distance of 800 ft.

Tho hearing of evidence in--the caso in which ex-Constable Skinuer is charged with committing perjury was continued R)-day. The taking of evidence for the defence was concluded.

In the Native Land Court this morning, Judge Scannell made an order under seefcittc--122 of tha Land Court Act, 1894, constituting certain natives interested in tho Poholrura Block of 55,000 acros, near Tarawera, a corporation, in order that they may elect a committee to deal with the block as they may think fi>. It is understood that the land is to be sold to'the Government. This, it is stated, is the first ortler of the kind made in tho colony.

WELLINGTON, September 24. The marble obelisk which tho Government have undertaken to place over the grave of the late Major Ropata is com-

pleted, and will be- shipped to Port "Awanui, East Coast, in a few days. The monument is about 10ft high, and ,bears tho following inscription:—"Sacred to the memory of Major Ropata Wahawaha, of the Great Ngatiporou tribe. Died lst July, 1897, aged about 80 years. The death is announced of the Rev. George Foster, the first resident Anglican minister at Timaru. He was curate and then incumbent of St. Mary's from 1860 to 1875. Since the latter date he had been farming.
