ANTI-GAMBLING LEAGUE.
IO THK KUITOK. Sis, —I was present at the above meeting last Monday night. As I listened to Miss Statham I wondered whether she was going beyond the facts, and 1 whispered to a gentleman sitting next to me (a man well qualified to express au opioion on the subject) : " O yes," said he, "there's any amount of betting and gambling oh the football matches." ' It is a great pity. "The trail of tho serpent is over it all," even our breeziest, healthiest outdoor amusements. Why cannot the game be played for the fun and honour of it? I believe that in the main it-is so, so far as the actual players are concerned ; it is among the spectators that the gambling takes place. " Devilled bones " and kidneys fiery hot with cayenne pepper are wanted to stimulate the jaded appetite which has forgotten how to eDJoy simple pleasures ! lam afraid that we shall require a very large amount of corroborative evidence before we can accept "Old Footballer*" disclaimer.—l am, &c, Dunedin, August 12. Citizen.
