SOUTH DUNEDIN.

The ordinary meeting of the South Danedin Council, held lssfc evening, was attended by the Mayor'(Mr G. Fisher), and Crs Kane, M'Key, Oaborna, Holley, Fidd'w, Thomas, Shacklock, aud Botbing. . , . ':

Tee Finance Committee recommended that the folio wing accounts be passed for payment :— Municipal account, £44 10s 8d; sanitary secounts, £19 6s 8d ;' water supply account, £7 16a lid. The balances of the several accounts were as follow :—Or municipal account, £4-18 10s lOd; Dr watsr supply account, £4-38 11s Id ; G- sanitary acr.ovmt, £78 2s 7d ; Dr interest account, £234-7 11s sd.—Adopted. Two ratepayers wrcto complaining that the contractor for the removal of nightsoil had not visited their houses.—The Clerk reported having written to the contractor. The Secretary of the Obago Central Railway League forwarded copy of a petition lor presentation to the House of Representatives, and requested that signatures might be obtained thereto.—Received, the petition having been in circulation in the district for a fortnight. The Town Clerk to the.C&veraham Council wrote requesting the South Dunedin Council to clean the mud off Cargill road.—Received. Mr A. C. Knowles wrote that the footpath in front of Mb shop in Cargill road be repaired.— It was resolved th_t the work be done. Mr B. W. Roper wrote that at a public meeting convened at Christphurch by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce a resolution was carried affirming the desirability of a training ship being secured for' the purpose of training the youths of the colony in navigation and requesting the co-operation and sympathy of the South '''Dunedin Council in the matter.— Received, Mr J. J. Kennedy, secretary to the faoutli Dunedin fire Brigade, wrote forwarding for tne council's approval the names of four men who had been nominated as members.—Referred to the Fire Brigade .Coanraittea to report. ; Mr R. Smith wrote complaining of tha state of the footpath in Prince Edward road.—lt was resolved to effect the necessary repairs. Mr W. Ings drew attention to the state of the footpath'in Helena street —Referred to the Allocution Committee. ' Cr Thomas stated that some of the councillors were retiring by rotation. One of them—Cr Shackloek—had beeii,returned unopposed, but the seats of the other two—Crs Kane and Fiddis—ware being contested. He referred to the conscientious mauner in which those two hud performed their duties. He proposed a motion to the (-.fleet that; a hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes to the retiring councillors for the active, energetic, and painstaking nisnaer in which they had discharged their duties during .their term of office.—Other councillors expressed their appreciation of the services rendered by those whose term of office had just concluded. —The motion was then pat and carried, after which the three gentlemen referred to made suitable acknowledgment. On the motion of Cr Shackxock, seconded by Cr Same, it. was resolved —"That the inspector employ ftxtra surfacemen to overtake tbe various works lately ordered if he could get sufficient material, and that metal in future be substituted for rotten rock.

PORT CHALMERS,

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Connqil was held yesterday evening ; present-Tee Mayor (Mr W. U. Innes), d' 3 Thomson, Pedlow, Leech, Wilson, Cameron, Dawson, Weir, InverArity, Watson, Edgar, Suttou, aud Murray. Mr A. M: Ross, _on. secretary to the Purakanui Presbyterian Church Committee, wrote askiDg if the counoil would be willing to sell from a quarter to half an acre of land at Purakanui on which it v/iis proposed to erect a church.—lt was moved by Cr Sutton and seconded by Cr Weik—" That an acre of ground for the proposed church site be sold to the applicants at ths sum of £10."— Cr Mdkray was not disposed to aliouats any portion of the council's endowment. — Cr Pedlow also.doubted the propriety of dealing with the corporation reserves.—The Mayor stated that if a bill passed through Parliament authorising the council to sell this or any portion of the reserves, they would be perfectly justified in iloicg so.—The motion was than put and carried. —Cr Mukbay protested agaiost the action of-the council. Mr A. Roach forwarded his valuation of section 31, block IV, North Harbour and Blueskiu district. —Received." The Secretary Municipal Conference, Wellington, wrote in reference to a meeting being held during the comiDg session of Parliament aa to the Local Bodies Act.—Received. Cr Dawson moved, and Cc Pedt.ow seconded " I'aafc section 31, together with that occupied by Mr M'Lachlan, be advertised for sale on Saturday, September 25." The Works Committee reported upon the various works which had occupied the inspector and his asuistnnt since laat meeting of the council. —Adopted. The Water Committee recommended that the water officer for shipping be supplied with one 60ft length of 2in North British indiarubbar hose and two 60ft lengths of lin hose, with the ueccsuary couplings.—Adopted. Ths Finance Committee recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £62 12s 7d. The receipts since last meeting had been: — Ufueral account, £96 12s sd; water aocount, £88 lls 7d ;—total, £185 Is. The committee also recommended that tho sum of £500 be transferred from the general to the water account.—Adopted,

— At a meeting of the Royal Botanio Society il; was stated that several of the streets of Basiogstoke had had to be repaved, owing to the flagstones having been forced out of position by an undergrowth of funzi.
