THEOSOPHY AND CREMATION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—la your report of the lecture by Colonel Olcott, he is credited with saying that cremation would prevent persons from being buried alive. True, bat it would burn them alive. Now, will he convir.es us which is the more to be dreaded ? If no better argument can be found for the unscriptursl and heathen custom of burning the dead than this foolish one, it will never supersede the present custom, which is natural, reasonable, and Scriptural. To Christians, the question is settled by their Divine Master, who said, "Let the dead bury their dead," and who was buried Himself and roee cgain. Thsosophists do not see that, notwithstanding their cry against materialists, in this body-burning they are at one with them, and also in denying the Resurrection. Of the two—Th:o3ophio mysticism and gross materialism —I would prefer the latter, as it has more common sense and less suDtsrsfcition in it.—l am, &c, t J. N.
