The engineers at Belfast who went out; on strike in support of the demands of the engineers in England for the introduction of the eight-hour system have withdrawn from the strike and. ie3umed work. The engineers' strike has canssd fresh dismissals on a largß seals amongst the workmen in the northern towns of England. September 4. A Free Labour Protection Association is being formed as the outcome of the present labour difficulties. Powerful influence will be brought to bear to test the efficiency of the laws protecting unionists. Amongst other objects, the Free Labour Protection Association is to keep a close watch on strikes, to ensure the observance of the law in regard to labour disputes, and to oppose any legislation injuriously affecting trade.
Afc a special meeting of the Duuedin Painters' Union, held in the Trades Hall oa. Saturday evening, a number of proposals respecting the conditions of labour, &c, were drawn up for submission during the week to the employers for their approval; failing which, the employers are to be requested to meet the union in conference. ;
