,_*_r Unit-d Ph-ss Association.) Auckland, October 12. Santa Solomon, with several aliases, appeared at the Police Court to-day on a charge cf obtaining £45 15s by false pretences. A remand was granted, bail in the meantime being refused. The annual Christian Endeavour Convention was held to-day. A warm discussion took place on a paper by Mr Baker, in which manly and athletic sports were commended. Several speakers deplored the inordinate attention now given to sports, and others defended football and crick.'.. Ac the executive tea to-night to ministers and their wives, Bishop Cowie and Mrs Cowie were present. Tbe Bishop expressed his sympathy with the Christian Endeavour movement, in which his wife shared. He said he was pleased to be present among his brethren, and referred to his long and pleasurable acqu.-iotance with his Presbyterian ministerial colleagues, the Revs. B. Modto and Thoma_ Norrie. Napiek, October 12. The strike at the breakwater is still unsettled. The contractor is not likely to accede tbe men's demands, and the strikers will be replaced by others. CHBisTCHnacH, October 12. At a meeting of the City Council to-night, Mr Oakley Archer, C.E., was appointed city surveyor.
