OUR VOLUNTEERS.
A commanding officer's parade of the Dunedin Engineers was held at the Garrison Hall on Wednesday eveniug, when about 60 officers and men were present. The corps paraded for the first time with the Martini rifles, with which 't has been recently equipped, and, under Sergeant-major Towler, a considerable amount of instruction in the manual, firing, and other exercises were gone through. After drill a meeting was held, when the recommendation of the officer commanding to appoint Mr W. R. Boutledge to the vacunii lieutenancy was confirmed. The promotion of Engineer Midgley to be lance-corporal was announced, asd Captain. Beal intimated that the company had secured the first carbine prize for Government volley firing, having made very satisfactory shooting. The following are the Dames of the member* who have been recommended for participation in the prize-money offered by the Garrison Hall Trustees for the 12 men with the best attendance and proficiency at outside work during the pa&t year, viz.:—Engineers Bcekman, Hay, and Matheson (signalling), Engineers Young, Campbell, and Whelan (ambulance), Engineer M'Rae (electrical), Lince-corporal Edmonds, Engineers Dredge, Flynn, Kewish, Miles (engineering).
