FREE SCHOLARSHIPS.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —It is stated in the letter of M Educationist," in your issue of the 7th inst^, that Dr Brown proposes to restrict free scholarships to those making over 75 per cent, of the marks obtainable at the Otago Education Board's scholarship examinations.
Is Dr Brown aware that »t the recent examination for junior scholarships not obb of those who gamed scholarships made 75 per cant. P The first on the list only mada 459 out of a possible 700. As percentages depend largely upon the difficulty of tae questions, and as this again varies with the examiner, the percentage limit must always be very uncertain. Would it not be better to fix absolutely the number of "free education" scholarships, and award them to the highest on fcbe list ? Any one who examines the questions put at the examination last year will quite understand how children of 13 or 14 years failed to make 75 per cent.—l sm, &c, March 10. Parent.
Some time ago four gentlemen who were strangers to each other were playing whist, when one of them had the whole 13 trumps dealt to him, and yet he did not win. " Impossible ! " you say. Not at sH. His partner led an ace, he tramped it, and his partner flun? down his hand in disgust. The'only "trump" that never fails is the new Waterbury Watch—a marvel of cheicnese, Obtainable even? where.
