WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.

(Fhom Otre Own Correspondent.)

Wellington, March 10.

An applicant for charitable aid, at the meeting of tke Beubvolent Institution Trustees this afternoon, informed the trustees that at the present time there were about 500 men out.of employment in the Wellington, district. ■ Questioned ss to his source of information, this gentleman stated that ha had been tramping round looking for work' for the past six weeku, and added, further, that ha had spoken to the officers of the Labour Bureau on the subject. Upon inquiry at the Labour Bureau I learn that at the present time there are some 60 or 70 men on what is known aa their visiting list for Wellington City. These men call at the bureau every other day to sea if work of any kind is open to' them. Moat of the men are of the labouring class, and ia addition to them there are no doubt many tradesmen and clerks—particularly the latter—seeking work who do not register at the bureau. I have it on excellent authority that the unemployed question is the cause of very muoh anxiety at headquarters jusb now. ■•

The strained relations between the Premier and the metropolitan racing club for this district continues. Mr Seddon still shows a firm front, and the metropolitan club declines 'to back dowD ;so matters are at a deadlock. The Wellington Racing Club, which is the metropolitan club for the district, applied some three weeks ago for a totalisator permit for its Autumn meeting, to be held at the end of April, bub up to the present has received no reply; and, if the Premier adheres to b.13 expressed intention of issuing no more permits for this district, the meeting will in all probability have to be abandoned. It is stated, however, that some understanding will be arrived at before thiugs come to such a pass rs that. The Premier wai in error in stating that no reduction in the number of rasing club meetings had been made in this district. Ttie number of meetings was reduced from 17 to 11.
