DEGREES FOR OTAGO GRADUATES.

Mr J. R. Don, vice-principal of the Dunedin Training College and lecturer on Geology at the University of Otago, has received intimation that he has gained the degree of Doctor of Science. Dr Chilton and Mr Don are the only two Now Zealand graduates who have gained this distinction. It is granted only to those who have taken flrst-olass honours iii science, an.^ a. period of five years has to be spent iv scientific research after honours in science are taken before the degree of D.So. is conferrad. Mr Don's research has occupied all his spare time for the past six years, his subject being "Thegenesis of auriferous deposits, from a chemical point of view." Mr Don's university career has bean undoubtedly brilliant when it is remembered that during the whole of his studies he has successfully'carried on his work as a teacher. As the result of his olass-wotk at the Otsgo University be gaiued 11 first class and two second.class cerM6cates, aud first place iv class in mental .science, geology, practical physics, general biolcgy, and zoology. Ha took his B.A. degree iv 1386, the M.A. degree with first-class honours in inorganic chemistry and chemical technology in iBB7, his B.So. degree in 1889, and he has now gained the ciowning honour of D.Sc. Mr Don's many frieuds will be pleased to learn of his success, which is an honour % to the University of Otago, whero he is now engegtd as one of the lecturers. Mr C. O. Lillie, M.A., has been notified that he has passed the examination for the B.Sc. degree.

Mr Neil Paterson, 8.A., son of Mr Archibald Paterson, of Waihola, has passed tho secoud section of the LL B. degree at the New Zealand University examination.

Miss Jessie H. Rutherford (University of Otago) has taken the degree of M.A., with first-class honours in English and French. Mr Alexander D. Wilkinson (University of Otago) has taken the degree of M.A., with second-class honours in Latin and English.

Mr 13. Pindcr (head teacher Sawyers' Bay School) has paused the examination for M.A. with second-claso honours, entitling him to the Education Board'B certificate A, and now ranks Al.
