CRICKET.

OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. (Fbom Our Own Correspondent.)

Invercargill, February 19,

The third interptovincial cricket match between Otago and Southland commenced bore to-day on a perfect wicket, and almost, strange to relate, in perfect weather. Tho attendance was highly satisfactory, and augurs well for cricket. hero, which hitherto has not been well supported by fche publio. Mr Alexander Cross umpired for Southland and Mr Smyth for Otago. The l&tter's decision in giving Fox out lbvr in tho first innings of Southland was admittedly wrong, and a great misfortune for tho homo team. The Invercargill Garrison Band enlivened the proceedings. Tie whole arrangements for the match aro admirably carried out by Mr T. H. Jones, in tho absence of Mr Twemldw, who' was unable to take any part in the proceedings. The City Guards Band are playing on the rotunda to-night fur the entertainment of the guests and the public generally, and to-morrow night the Otago team will be entertained afc a smoke concert by the Southland Association: The weather promises well for to-morrow's play.

Parker and Burnes captained the Otago and Southland; teams respectively. The latter winning , t the toss, elected to send his -mun to tbo wickets. Their first innings -'totalled 80, of which Fox made 26 and Burnea 16. Both were playing admirable criokot when Fox wai unfortunately given out Ibw." Kane and Walter Quinn, two yonng players, batted wel), but displayed au absolute wanfc of knowledge between the wickets, both sacrificing themselves —run out. Upon the whole Otago's fielding was considered loose, and their bowling was. not-up to the expected form. Otago's innings was commenced by Baker and Liggins, the latter carrying out his bat after a capital display of cricket. He was carried shoulder-high by bis comrades amidst the applause of the field. Baker played a most useful innings for 26, but the rest of the . team collapsed, Robertson getting Clarke with a beautiful leg break 'which took his off bail. The innings closed for a total of 115. The second innings of Southland was opened auspiciously by C. Kane and Arthur Carver, the first wicket falling for 39. At the finish of tho day's play the total stood at S2 for seven wickets, leaving Robertson, Findlay, aod Boyes to follow. The following are the detailed scores :— ' Southland.—First Innings.
