WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The'oidinary meeting of this County Counoil was held in the Council Chambers, Palmerston, on Wednesday last, at which there were present—The Chairman (Mr T. Muir), and Crs J. Hartstonge, jun., Sl. Goodwood Riding.—The water tables in this, riding required cleaning out and the culverts cleared at both ends. ' ': COBKESPONDEKCE, The Secretary of the Department of Lands rod Snrvey, IJanedin, wrote intimating that the gum of £2*6. 13s 2d, thirds and fourths, accrued during the period between July 29 Mid Ootober 26,' 1895,' had been' paid into the Bank of New Zealand to the credit of the council.—-Received. Mr E. Matheson, Waihemo Downs, wrote drawing attention to the slow progress made by the contractor on M'Donald'-, road. At the , present rate of, progress he did not expect to. see the road finished within the next three months. Mr John Coom, resident engineer, Dnnedin, .wrote stating that the crossing at-section 70, block VII, Moeraki, had not been authorised, but that the matter was under consideration.— ■Received. '•

The Chief Surveyor, Dunedin, wrote requesting to be furnished with a report showing what roads- the council would recommend to be formed Io give access to unsold lands in the district daring the year ending March 31, 1887, and to state "as clearly as possible the extent of the roads the connell would recommend to be formed, the nature of the work to be effected, and the cost per. chain, also the area of unsold land that will be benefited, by the roads formed, &c.—Received, the council having no recommendation to make.

The Receiver of Gold Revenue, Naseby, •wrote intimating that rents payable to the coancil amounting to £12 93 had been collected during the month of December,, but that no rents had been received daring the month of January last.—Eeceived.

The Secretary to the Scbool Commissioners for Hie : Otago Provincial District, Dunedin, -mote bringing nnder the attention of ths council -tm application from Mr John Caldwell, leases' of the education reserve (section 80, Hock X), Moeraki district, for assistance in forming a rraid to give him access to the said section, Msd asking the council to favourably consider tbe matter.—The clerk was instructed to inform Mr Hacandrdw that a committee, from the council had been appointed to inspect the road, and tbeir report wa3 to the effect that it-was not nececsary to make any further improvements to the road. .-.-,■.

The Disiarict Engineer, Dnnedin, wrote stating that the.Under-Secretary for Public Works had•sgreed to the resident engineer, Central Ot»gp, undertaking the supervision of the construc'ion of the Capburn bridge. He pointed out, however* that shonld it be necessary to put oa au inspector from time to time any salary paid ten or other expenses incurred in connection ■with tie supervision of the work would be charged to the council. —Received;

The Clerk "Waikouaiti County Council wrote asking for the services of the Waihemo county inspector to, in conjunction with the inspector Ot tha Waikouaiti County Council, report on the state- and condition of the' Waikouaiti bridge, the repairs necessary, and the probable cost of the same.—The application tfas granted. "'.'■• OTHER MATTERS. ■ The council resolved to intimate to Mr Dodd Chat if bis contract for work at Hyde is not completed within the specified time the penalty will be enforced. ' It was alßo resolved to give a general intimation to intending contractors for county work that, except under exceptional circumstances, the time allotted for all contracts would in future be striotly enforced and adhered to. The Chairman reported that- he and Cr Isbister bad interviewed. Mr W. Robertson re ■ road to Mr M'Elwie's property, but.that Mr Robertson had declined to grant any further concession than thathe had already agreed to.
