A 6 a: meeting "of tho Harbour Boatd Mt M'Niccol (the chairman) in moving the adoption of the annual report.said :—"Therevenue collected during 1895 exceeds the amount of any previous year, and I need hardly remind you that not only wero there no additional charges imposed, but, on the contrary, various concessions were made to importers, shippers, and tenants of the board which considerably rereduced the amount of dues and rents receivable. A close scrutiny of accounts, howevor, clearly proves that a much larger quantity of goods passed over our wharves during the last year than during any previous year and this, taken in conjunction with the fact that the anDual easterns return of imports and exports shows Auckland heading tbe list of ports in the colony) with a large amount in excess of the previous year, accounts naturally aud satisfactorily for the increased revenue of the board. This expansion of tho trade of the pott is no doubt largely due to the recent revival in gold-mining and tha general activity in commercial circles resultiug from that; but the improvement is not confined to one industry alone and the eteady advance of fettlement in the northern portion of this island, the activity of our timber business, the increased output of the local coal mines, and the rapid development of our Island trade encourages ns to anticipate that the present prosperous condition of Auckland will be permanent and progressive."
