Auckland, February 19.

The charge of manslaughter against tho man Alexander, who was with Stokes, the cabdriver, when the latter was fatally injured by a fall from his cab, was dismissed to-day ond accused discharged.

At a meeting of the council of the Auckland University College, Professor Tubbs sent in a letter tendering bid resignation as from the 31s!i May next, and thanked the council for fche consideration manifested to him. The resignation was accepted with deep regret by the council, ;ind they testified that he*had discharged the duties of his office in the uuiversifcy college with eminent ability and success. The motion was carried unanimously. The question of a permanent successor was then discussed. Dennis Patrick Mahoney, charged witti tho theft of money at Ashburton, was fomid not guilty. Joseph Prince pleaded guilty to a. charge of embezzling the fuuds of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, and was sentenced to 12 months'imprisonment. Chas. Chapman, charged with stabbing Loom Frederickseu at, Lyttelton, was found guilty, with a recommendation to mercy, and sentenced ■to six months' imprisonment. Frank Bsrketfc, criminal assault, was sentenced to five years, This ooueluded the business of the criminal sessions.
