TENNIS TOURNAMENT.

The annual lawn tennis tournament bf the Otago Lawn Tenuis Association was commenced yesterday morning at the Otago Club's courts under very favourable circumstances. - The vreatiier was superb for tennis, though possibly a trifle too hot, and tho lawns and'asphalt courts were in linn order. An early start was mado with the different events, and play was kept up continuously as loug as the light lasted, with the .result that good progress was made. The play exhibited was, though interesting, not, generally spetkiug, of a phenomenal character, and does not call for special comment, but there were occasional instances where the onlookers, who were, numerous in the afternoon, were treated to some very floe sets. Iv the Gentlemen's Singles for th* Championship of Otago a better contest might have been expected between Burrows and Hogg, bub the latter player appeared to be very much rff. Burrows played rather a slow game and neyer appeared to "be called upou to exert himself, and it was a comparatively e»sy win for him. The encounter between Adams and Macdonald for the same event was marked by a few brilliant stroke? iv tha, firjt set, tbe second being won by Adams rather easily. From his play yesterday it would appear as if he bad a good proepect of coming out on top, or at leant, being very close at the fim'sh. In the Ladies' Singles Championship Miss Macdonald aud Mrs Tennant tit hard right through, and the placing of both iras good. There were some brilliant rallies, and the game was very evenly contested. One of the best ladies' sets during the day was that between Miss Mackerras ond Miss Jeffery. The latter, who belongs to the Lawrence Club, played an excellent game, but was somewhat haimpered iv her play by the long skirt Bhe wore. Indeed, had this event not bten altered this year by tha committee to an advantage set, Miss Jeffery would have won tbe set and have had a good say for the championship, as at one time she was nine games to Miss Mackerras'- eight, which nnderthe old system would have counted »s a win. Altogether the visiting players, such as Miss Jeffery, Miss May Macdonald (Invercargill), Messrs Vickers ai.d Macdonald (Invercargill) and Lynch and Newton (Oamaru) gave a good account of themselves. The most interesting of the Men's Doubles for the championship was probably that between Hogg and Sleigh and the two Adams. The game was a well contested one, and in many instances tho play was brilliant, the volleying being particularly good. The last set played, which was that in the Champion Men's Doubles between Harraway and Sise, and Branson and Fenton w&s probably the most extraordinary one of the day. The opposing plsyvrv gob a set all, and in the final Branson at>d S:»e were five games to love, and their winning tbe set seemed a certainty. Harraway and Sise, however, pulled themselves together and won the next seven games in succession, thus pulling the match out of the fire in a most unnsual manner.

To-day there are sure to be some particularly interesting sets, and no doubt there will be a good attendance of tbe public.
