THE BURGLARY IN RUSSELL STREET.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—You havenot been oonectly informed stbDufc the attempted burglary which took place in our house on Saturday evening.. The man did.not threaten that ",my life would be the forfeit if I did not dalivsr my money" ; and my mother, who occupies the same bedroom as I do, instead of "not hearing anything until aroused by my. cries," hoard every word, and started" up in bed and lit the candle at once when she heard the knock. On my inquiring, I " Who is there ? " aud " What do jbu want ? " the reply came slowly and distinctly, '.' Is there auy money here?" My mother and.) conferred ! together as,to. the wisest and safest course we [ could pursue. The voice then said, " Deliver |it op," and.after a pause, " Quick about it." We both jumped out of bjd and threw on some clothes. I then "asked my mother if I would try and come to some terms with the man by promising to give him the cashbox if he promised us he would take it and go quietly without harming us. She consented, and I tried to get the man to speak, bnt there was no reply. My mother wanted to unlock the door to try to pass out out of the house. But I would not allow her, and forced her back, and threw up the window to call for aid. When I got a reply from the street I opaned the front door to let the people in. On turning back I met two gentlemen who came in ac the window. I rashly concluded they were burglars, and threw myself ou on f them to keep him from mixing with the en.- ,1 at the back of me. Allow me to take r.hid opportunity on behalf of my mother and myself to thank all those who so kindly cams to our assistance.—l am, &o. ( Ellsn B. M'Nbil. Dunedin, January 27.
